When an emergency happens and you’re far from help …

Aussies know they can count on the Flying Doctor to be there — any time of the day or night, no matter where they are. And this is largely thanks to our world-class pilots.

To reach remote communities, our pilots rely on private airstrips maintained by outback stations. We’re so thankful to community members who ensure the airstrips are safe and illuminated when they’re needed.

But when an outback airstrip is not much more than a strip of red dirt, surrounded by spinifex, and there’s not another light as far as the eye can see, lighting it up presents many challenges.

LED flares can be unreliable and solar lights are expensive and can appear quite dim from above. Property owners have even resorted to directing car headlights at the airstrip or making flares by lighting diesel-soaked toilet rolls.

With only makeshift lighting to guide their landing, pilots responding to an emergency at night can find themselves facing difficult landing conditions.

Watch the video to see a ‘dunny-roll landing’ as shot by RFDS Pilot Brady Thrift. It’s clear how skilled our pilots are!

Home grown ingenuity

During his 16 years as a rural pilot, RFDS Pilot Nick Tully has navigated difficult landings in some of our country’s most remote locations.

Nick recalls one particular landing at night, when a number of the LED flares lighting the airstrip failed.

“While all remote station landings at night pose challenges, this retrieval highlighted the importance of adequate resources and airstrip preparation; it was the catalyst for my idea to source a low cost, low maintenance, safe and convenient alternative.”

And these airstrips aren’t just for night-time emergencies – we fly in regularly, with nurses, doctors and mental health clinicians on board for Primary Health care clinics. Often this is the only way locals can see a GP, so ensuring these airstrips are up to scratch and our aircraft are fully stocked is vitally important.

It’s with thanks to the resourcefulness of RFDS pilots like Nick Tully, the dedication of our aeromedical teams, and generous supporters like you that we can deliver the best health care to Queenslanders, no matter where, no matter when.
